Lord of the Flies Found Poem

Lost in Paradise

(Found poem from William Golding's Lord of the Flies, Page 5-121)

Looking at the dazzling beach
they savored the right of domination
“This belongs to us.”
Under the green shadows from the palms
the afternoon sun slanted in
Warmth radiated now, and beat pleasantly on them-
A sunbath under a blue dome
Through the acres of fruit trees
Everywhere was the scent of ripeness
And the sound of bright fantastic birds, the roar of bees, even the crying of the gulls
They accepted the pleasures of the bright sun,
the whelming sea and sweet air
They found time for play, aimless and trivial
Gorging fruit in the forest

Within the diamond haze of the beach,
dark was fumbling along
the boys chattered and danced;  talked and screamed of
A beast, a fear, a horrid dream
They were forced at last
to believe in the reality:
Faced by the brute obtuseness of the ocean
one was clamped down,
one was helpless,

one was condemned.
